Here’s what to do in Montgomery County this week

When it comes to things to do each week, there’s no place quite like Montgomery County. The region is a hub for activities of all sorts, from art exhibits and theater to craft fairs, food festivals and inventive workshops. Yet with all the happenings across the area, it can be a challenge to figure out exactly what to do. To get started, here are our top picks for the week.

Friday: Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Maryland

Rose Park, 11878 Grand Park Ave., North Bethesda
Sept. 6, 12 p.m.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is an international event that raises funds and awareness for the Special Olympics. Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement officers carry the “Flame of Hope” each year, and this year Montgomery County will host its event at Rose Park at Pike and Rose. You can pre-register or register day of for the event with the purchase of a $20 Special Olympics t-shirt. 

Beginning Friday: DC South Asian Festival

Writers Center, 4508 Walsh St., Bethesda
Sept. 6-30

DC’s South Asian Festival celebrates South Asian culture through music, literature and film, with events kicking off on Sept. 6. Some events will be in person and others virtual. Find tickets for individual events at the link above.

Saturday: Maryland Cider Festival

7115 Damascus Road, Gaithersburg
Sept. 7, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Come out and try local ciders at the second annual Maryland Cider Festival. In addition to drinks, there will be food, live music and local craft vendors. The $35 ticket includes entrance, a tasting glass and unlimited cider samples from the 10 cider producers in attendance.

Saturday: Silver Spring Jazz Festival

Veterans Plaza, 1 Veterans Place, Silver Spring
Sept. 7, 3-10 p.m.

Afro-Cuban jazz legend Chucho Valdés will headline the 20th Silver Spring Jazz Festival. There will be six other performers and a raffle, plus food and drink for purchase at this free event. See the full performance line-up at the link above.

Sunday: Wheaton Passport to Sports

Wheaton Ice Arena, 11717 Orebaugh Ave., Wheaton
Sept. 8, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Enjoy a variety of athletic events including bubble soccer, cardio tennis and figure skating at the family-friendly Wheaton Passport to Sports. Tickets cost $10 per person and grant you a “passport” that you can get stamped at each of the three facilities open for sporting activities. Once you have every stamp, enter the raffle!

And one event worth the trip: Adams Morgan Day

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.
Sept. 8, 12-7 p.m.

Take a trip into D.C. for the city’s longest-running neighborhood festival. There will be community history, dance performances, and food and craft vendors. A full events schedule is available at the link above. Take the metro from Montgomery County to the Dupont Circle or Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan stops.
